If you’re looking for a massive directory that lists every single place with a black bean burger on the menu, you’re in the wrong place, lots of other sites have that covered. This is a highly curated guide to the best vegan restaurants in Toronto, written by an actual local.
I was born and raised right here in Toronto. I grew up vegetarian, went fully vegan in 2018, and have spent years eating my way through this city’s incredible vegan scene. This city is easily one of the greatest food courts in the world, but with so many options, figuring out where to actually spend your money can be overwhelming.
That’s why I built this list. Instead of throwing 40+ random names at you, I’ve narrowed it down to the spots I actually send my friends to. And to make this as stress-free as possible, every single restaurant on this list is 100% vegan (two small exemptions that are clearly flagged) so you don’t have to worry about shared fryers, cross-contamination, or double-checking the menu.
Whether you’re looking for an upscale date night, mind-blowing sushi, or just the best plant-based pizza in your neighborhood, here are the Toronto spots actually worth your time.
Best for Date Night & Fine Dining
Avelo / Bar Avelo — Downtown / Yorkville
- Vibe: Intimate, elegant, and historic
- Standout Dish: The rotating 5- or 8-course plant-based tasting menu
- Price: $$$$

If you want to experience the absolute pinnacle of plant-based fine dining in Toronto, this is it. Tucked away in a Victorian heritage townhouse near Yorkville, this space actually houses two different concepts. Downstairs is Avelo, an exclusive, reservations-only dining room where Chef Fernando Anrango crafts mind-blowing 5- or 8-course tasting menus (ranging from $70 to $135 per person) using fermentation, house-made nut-free cheeses, and seasonal produce. Upstairs, tucked under a dramatic arched ceiling, is Bar Avelo, a cozy, moody cocktail lounge serving a more casual, à la carte tapas menu from the same kitchen. Chef Fernando and owner Roger Yang have created something truly special here. We are incredibly lucky to have a 100% vegan culinary experience of this caliber in the city.
Green Zebra Kitchen
Enjoy 15% off your entire first order of healthy vegan, gluten and refined sugar free meals from Green Zebra.
PLANTA Queen — Entertainment District
- Vibe: High-energy, upscale, and perfect for cocktails
- Standout Dishes: Bang Bang Broccoli & any Sushi item
- Price: $$$

PLANTA Queen is one of my favourite spots in the city, especially for a fun date night or a dinner out with non-vegan friends who need convincing. The massive, beautifully designed space on Queen West specializes in 100% vegan Asian cuisine. Their vegan sushi is so good it will genuinely make you do a double-take. Recently, I’ve loved that they’ve expanded their menu beyond just vegetables to include heartier, protein-packed options like their “steak” made by Chunk and creative tofu dishes.
Bellona Kitchen — Baby Point / Little Italy
- Vibe: Warm, welcoming, and down-to-earth Italian
- Standout Dish: The Vegan Calzone and the Tiramisu
- Price: $$

(Note: Bellona Kitchen is a vegetarian, plant-forward Italian restaurant. While it is the only spot on this list that isn’t 100% vegan, their dedicated vegan options are entirely made from scratch and too good to ignore).
If you are craving the comfort of a Sunday dinner at Nonna’s house, you have to visit Bellona Kitchen. Owned by husband-and-wife team Johnnie and Aggie Fusco, this place is the definition of a passion project. Johnnie has over 25 years of experience as a chef, and when he and Aggie adopted a plant-inspired lifestyle, they decided to open their own kitchen to share their generational recipes. The food is incredibly fresh, the portions are hearty, and the atmosphere makes you feel like you’re eating in their family dining room. Their house-made vegan pastas and desserts (specifically the vegan Tiramisu) are incredible.
Best Vegan Asian & Sushi
Sushi Momo — West Queen West
- Vibe: Trendy, lively, and great for cocktails
- Standout Dishes: Agedashi Tofu & Mr Crunch Futomaki
- Price: $$$

Toronto’s vegan sushi scene leveled up significantly when Sushi Momo arrived. If you are familiar with the Montreal vegan scene, you already know the name. Chef and owner Christian Ventura originally launched this concept in Montreal over a decade ago to massive acclaim. They then over the old Hello 123 space on Queen West in Toronto, and the location is stunning (especially the patio in the summer). While some places just use cucumber and avocado for vegan sushi, Momo’s rolls are incredibly elaborate, layering complex flavours, sauces, and textures. It’s also an amazing cocktail bar with lots of great choices.
Saigon Lotus — Kensington Market / Chinatown
- Vibe: Casual, friendly, and super laid-back
- Standout Dish: The Vegan Dry Pho and the Banh Mi Combo
- Price: $

If you love Vietnamese food but are tired of asking if the broth has fish sauce in it, Saigon Lotus in Kensington Market is your safe haven. The entire menu is vegan, incredibly affordable, and the portions are generous. It’s the perfect spot to grab a quick, satisfying lunch while walking around the market. I highly recommend getting one of their combos (Bánh Mì with fries) and their pan-fry vegan Pho, packed with seitan, tofu and other mock meats.
Tenon Vegan Sushi — The Annex
- Vibe: Casual, easy, and completely unpretentious
- Standout Dish: The Spicy “Tuna” Roll and Inari
- Price: $$

This is easily one of my most-visited restaurants in Toronto because it’s just so easy and consistently good. Located right on Bloor Street in the Annex, Tenon Vegan Sushi is a totally unpretentious, casual spot that focuses purely on delivering great flavours at very decent prices. While fine-dining sushi is great for special occasions, Tenon is my go-to for a standard Tuesday night craving. You absolutely have to get their spicy “tuna” and the sweet, marinated tofu pockets (Inari).
Greens Vegetarian Restaurant — Chinatown / Kensington
- Vibe: Down-to-earth, old-school family run staple in Toronto
- Standout Dishes: #53 and #40
- Price: $

I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of my top three favorite restaurants in the entire city, regardless of the type of food. Greens is a humble, down-to-earth family-run business on Dundas West that serves up incredible Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai vegan dishes. And almost every time I go I get the exact same thing: #53 (Crispy noodles with mock duck and vegetables) and #40 (Deep fried tofu with minced vegetables and mushroom) on the menu. The textures of their mock meats are great, the portions are big, and the prices are don’t make you broke.
Best Vegan Comfort Food & Quick Bites
Soy Boys — Queen West / Downtown Core
- Vibe: Fast, fun, and indulgent
- Standout Dish: The Classic Cheese Burger and the massive fry portions
- Price: $

When you want a greasy, unapologetic, fast-food-style burger, you go to Soy Boys. In my opinion, they make the absolute best vegan smash burgers in the city. Located right on Queen West, it’s a great spot to grab a quick bite, especially in the summer when you can sit on their patio. They also have their original location on Church St. as well. The burgers are perfectly crispy and savoury, but a quick warning: their portion sizes for fries are big, so come hungry if you decide to order them.
Taqueria Vegana — Dovercourt Village / Junction
- Vibe: Homemade, flavourful, and authentic
- Standout Dishes: Capeaditos & Seitan Carnitas Taco
- Price: $$

If you want authentic, vegan Mexican food, this is the absolute pinnacle in Toronto. They specialize in takeout and quick bites, operating out of two locations. The menu hits all the classic taqueria notes (tacos, quesadillas, burritos) but everything is built from scratch using plant‑based proteins and house sauces. My must‑order items are the Capeaditos—crispy, battered oyster mushrooms served with their addictive, smoky Morita mayo—and the Seitan Carnitas Taco, made with slow‑cooked, marinated seitan and topped with bright pickled onions. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a quick, affordable meal, but the flavours are so dialled in that it still feels special.
The Hogtown Vegan — College Street
- Vibe: Classic diner, relaxed, and unpretentious
- Standout Dish: The Unchicken + Waffles or the Phish & Chips
- Price: $$

You can’t talk about vegan comfort food in Toronto without talking about The Hogtown Vegan. They are one of the true OGs of the city’s vegan scene. The atmosphere is casual; it feels like a classic, neighbourhood diner where you can just relax and enjoy their menu that leans heavily into Southern-style comfort food, making it the perfect spot for when you need plate of mac and cheese or crispy “unchicken” after a long week.
La Vegan Ethiopian & Eritrean — The Danforth
- Vibe: Cozy, cultural, and meant for sharing
- Standout Dish: The Veggie Combo Platter (add the Tofu Zigni)
- Price: $$

This hidden gem on the Danforth serves up some of the most incredibly fresh and flavorful food in the entire city. Traditional Ethiopian and Eritrean food is already very plant-forward, but having a fully vegan spot means you can order blindly without worrying about hidden butter or meat broths. I almost always get the large Combo Platter so I can try a little bit of everything. You use the spongy, sour injera bread to scoop up the different stews and make sure your platter includes the Tofu Zigni (a rich, spicy stew simmered in Berbere sauce). It is a phenomenal, hands-on dining experience.
Animal Liberation Kitchen (ALK) — Riverside / East End
- Vibe: Grab-and-go, mission-driven, and very casual
- Standout Dish: The Vegan Croissant Sandwiches
- Price: $$

Animal Liberation Kitchen is a small, family‑run vegan business tucked just off Queen & Broadview, built on animal rights and social justice. These days they’re open on limited weekends only, so it’s very much a “plan your visit” kind of place rather than an every‑day café. The menu is compact but dialled in: flaky croissant sandwiches, jackfruit shawarma, mac and cheese, hearty bowls, plus plenty of sweet options. It’s one of my favourite East End spots to grab something fast that still feels homemade and nourishing.
Best Vegan Bakeries & Sweets
Tsuchi Cafe — Little Italy
- Vibe: Minimalist, serene, and incredibly detail-oriented
- Standout Dish: The Beignets and Onigiri
- Price: $$

Tsuchi is Toronto’s first and only plant-based Japanese cafe, and the level of care they put into everything is astounding. The attention to detail is evident in every single corner of the experience, from the custom stickers on their packaging to the immaculate presentation of the food and the cleanliness of the space. They have mastered vegan creams and custards; unlike many vegan desserts that leave a heavy, oily aftertaste, Tsuchi’s creams are incredibly light and fluffy (especially in their famous pillowy beignets and cheesecakes). On the savoury side, you absolutely must grab a trio of their Onigiri (the seaweed-wrapped rice triangles filled with things like shiitake and karaage).
Bad Attitude Bread — Dundas West
- Vibe: Edgy, European-style neighborhood bakery
- Standout Dishes: The Pizza Buns and Croissants
- Price: $

Bad Attitude Bread is a small vegan bakery on Dundas West that focuses on really good dough rather than gimmicks. The croissants are properly flaky, the pizza buns are generous without being greasy, and the cinnamon buns are rich but not overwhelmingly sweet. It’s the kind of place you stop into for a coffee and a pastry and end up leaving with a bag of extras for later.
Machino Donuts — Bloorcourt
- Vibe: Bright, colorful, and fun
- Standout Dish: Cruller & Apple Fritter
- Price: $

If I feel like a good donut this is where I go to. A lot of vegan donut options overcompensate by making their glazes aggressively, tooth-achingly sweet, but Machino finds the right balance. The dough is soft and fresh, and their flavour profiles (which rotate) are always sophisticated without being overly heavy.

Top Pick for Plant-Based Pizza
Blondies Pizza — Multiple Locations
- Vibe: Trendy, takeout-focused, and iconic pink boxes
- Standout Dish: Custom build with vegan cheese, mushrooms, and sundried black olives
- Price: $$
While Blondies is not a 100% vegan restaurant, I had to put them in the top spot because their vegan pizza is arguably one of the best in the city. The magic here for me is the crust. Perfectly soft and chewy on the inside with an incredible crisp on the bottom. To order it vegan, you just build your own pie and ask to swap for their vegan cheese (there is an upcharge sadly). While their vegan cheese recipe used to be absolutely legendary a few years ago, they did change it. It is still really good and melts nicely, but the crust alone is enough to keep me coming back.
